TOTALLY PALMED: This is Only the Beginning!

Welcome!

In this world of short attention spans and information overload, I felt compelled to add yet another blog to the blogosphere... "Why," you ask?

Heard of Apple's "Jesus phone?"
... Meet Palm's "Hail Mary..."

 The Palm Pre!

This website is dedicated to the Palm Pre, and Palm's miraculous comeback from the brink of oblivion. The Palm Pre is simply the best damn phone I've ever owned, and easily one of the best purchases I've made in recent memory. Before we get things started, I’d like to thank my friend Ves for getting me started on all of this.

For this first post, I figured it would be appropriate to go into…

My "Palmed" Past

I had owned various Palm devices dating back to the Palm III (did I just date myself?).

I was present at the very point in history when PDA's morphed into smartphones... it happened quite by accident during my pediatrics residency in Miami when my Palm Zire 72 and flip phone were stolen at the same time (thanks, Biltmore hotel valet)...

I needed a solution and DING! it hit me like a ton of bricks: buy a (refurbished) Treo 650 and suddenly two devices can become ONE! Simple! ... She was a bit of a chunker, yes, but but it was a thing of beauty how a phone and PDA could come together in a well-built package. I happily used this device with Sprint for years. As with any relationship, the passion started to fizzle. Sure, the Treo was a capable device, and Palm's OS was comfortable... familiar... but getting rather long in the tooth. Where had their innovation gone off to? I often found myself pausing in front of cell phone retailers searching for something new and exciting.

So naturally, when Apple sprinkled fairy dust on everyone with their "phone that shook the world," I was hooked. Up until that point, the iPhone's OS was unlike anything I had ever seen. Its almost embarrassingly simple design, user interface, and fluidity was way too much for this techie geek to resist. I won't go into the tumultuous relationship that followed yet (stick around... ha!), but let's just say... it was a rebound relationship (yes, Apple... I just called your iPhone a REBOUND relationship! She meant NOTHING to me! Hahaha!) I finished the last quarter of my contract with AT&T with the Palm Centro... Treo productivity, with slightly better form factor (except those tiny keys!)

... And that was when I saw Palm's 2009 CES keynote announcing the arrival of the Palm Pre... I had previously read that Palm was "up to something," but I had no idea it would be anything this big... Multitasking. Contact and calendar synergy. Discreet notifications. Real keyboard. Gorgeous design. Removable battery. Touchstone battery charger. The list just went on and on and on! I was in love... in the six agonizing months that passed until the it launched, I read absolutely everything there was to read about the Palm Pre. Finally, on June 6th, 2009, I strolled into a Sprint store in Ft. Lauderdale and picked one up. My expectations for the phone were very, very high. Did it meet them? Overall, absolutely. Minor niggles aside, it's the best phone I've ever owned, bar none.  This blog site is dedicated to the Palm Pre and the company that created it.  I hope you enjoy it.
